Amache Preservation Society Program and Sandra Dallas Book Talk

Marge Taniwaki with the Amache Preservation Society

and Sandra Dallas on her book Tallgrass.

      February 9, 2020 - 2 - 4 p.m., with refreshments at the DWPC Clubhouse 1325 Logan St., Denver 80203. Admission: $18 members; $20 non-members. Register at dwpconline.org (http://dwpconline.org). Seating is limited

After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, all persons of Japanese extraction were ordered to be removed from the West Coast to internment camps further inland. In mid-February of 1942, Colorado officials were asked to survey the state for “appropriate” housing sites for Japanese evacuees. They settled on Granada in southeast Colorado.

Denver Woman’s Press Club (DWPC) will commemorate this event in the month it happened with Marge Taniwaki who represents the Amache Preservation Society, a volunteer group that maintains the camp site, museum and research center in Granada, and makes people aware of what happened 78 years ago so that it may never happen again.

Marge Taniwaki spent her formative years incarcerated near Death Valley, California, in one of ten major U.S. concentration camps for Americans of Japanese ancestry, during World War II. For more than four decades, Marge has advocated for historic clarification of the wholesale violation of human and Constitutional rights by the government. Her willingness to discuss her experience of the mass incarceration is exceptional. Traumatized by their experience, the first and second generations rarely spoke of what they lost or of their time spent behind barbed wire.

The Denver Woman’s Press Club has invited Marge to present a visual presentation and talk. In addition, DWPC member Sandra Dallas will discuss her book Tallgrass, a poignant story inspired by the site in Granada. Part thriller, part historical novel, Tallgrass is a riveting exploration of the darkest—and best—parts of the human heart. Sandra Dallas will have books available for sale and the DWP will serve Japanese cookies and tea.

About the Denver Woman's Press Club:

The Denver Woman’s Press Club (DWPC), founded in 1898, is one of the oldest press clubs in the nation — but it's far from old-fashioned! All 200 members are professional writers: journalists, novelists, magazine editors, essayists, freelance writers, poets, historians, and corporate and mass communications specialists. The club offers a range of public and members-only programs, author receptions, and writing workshops for budding and experienced writers, and it supports students of journalism, mass communications, and creative writing through various scholarships.
